Lesson 5
Application of Knowledge and Skills
Essential Question: How did the events in Abraham Lincoln's life express his internal conflict between his personal beliefs and what was necessary to preserve the Union?
Note to Instructor:
- The final lesson of this unit is designed to provide students with the opportunity to explore a question or topic that was not fully answered or studied within this unit. This lesson is designed to put the students in control of their own learning. The lesson includes both content and multimedia to be used by the students. The length of this lesson, group composition, and project format is entirely up to the teacher.
Directions:
- Have students review the documents and charts utilized in this unit. Focus the students on the question anchor chart created in Lesson 2. Have students examine what questions and/or topics have not been fully answered or explored. Students can add new questions they generated from previous lessons that they may have not shared previously.
- Have the students identify which questions they are still curious to learn about.
- Explain to the students that they can choose a student generated question to research and present to the class.
- Outline the project expectations for the students. Example expectations are listed below.
- Review with students the available multimedia platforms that can be used. Examples are provided below.
- Students can work independently or with a small group based on teacher discretion.
- Teacher discretion should be used in the requirements and length of class time used for this project. Teachers should encourage, and possibly require, the students to seek out primary sources to support their research.
- Students will present their final projects to the class and will be reviewed by their peers using the rubric provided under the resources tab.
